Reviewed Showcase App
WebSnapshot
May 16th 2008 | by James
WebSnapshot by Daniel Wanja of OnRails.org was originally released in June 2007 while AIR was in beta.
The application is simple but effective, type a URL then take a snapshot using one of the three sizing methods; Thumbnail, Browser or fullpage view. The sizes that are used for each setting are configurable via the preferences menu for both scale and actual pixel sizes.
Thumbnails of the taken snapshots are then shown horizontally, so you could take snaps of many websites at different sizes then chose which ones to save to disk. Clicking on a thumbnail saves the image to the destination as set in the preferences. There is also an auto save option.
Design eye
Although the application worked as intended, I couldn’t help feeling the usability was a bit wrong. I would do away with the ‘snap’ button and just have the three sizing buttons instead. Also I think that moving the buttons underneath the URL bar would be more logical.
The design is clear and I think it is using the darkroom Flex theme from ScaleNine.
Technical eye
Rebuilt using Adobe Flex 3 and utilising the advantages of the integrated WebKit browser inside of AIR.
