Updating.me
September 02nd 2008 | by James
Updating.me is a new microblogging service for submitting your status to multiple services simultaneously from one place.
This we based startup, which is currently in private beta, now has an accompanying Adobe AIR application that makes the service really easy to use. Firstly a visit to the Updating.me website is in order to register for the service.
The AIR application is just a lite view of the Updating.me service. You can’t add or remove services here, I guess this is just a current limitation of their beta api.
Another limitation here is that the selection for the services is a drop down list. The result is that you can’t multiple select. So you have a choice of sending an update to a single service or all services. This is a major drawback and hopefully something that gets improved in the future.
I also had an issue with adding an image, basically it didn’t work. The idea is that you can drag and drop an image into the AIR app. After dragging an image in a missing image placeholder was displayed, could be a pathing issue?
Exclusively for RefreshingApps readers we have 15 beta invites for Updating.me so be quick head over there now to claim yours and give it a try using the beta code RefreshingApps.
The service is currently early beta and hopefully will improve, although I couldn’t help feeling that Ping.fm was a more rounded and suitable service. Albeit they don’t have their own AIR application.
Previously featured on RefreshingApps was SocialAddict that offers better integration and Ping.fm support.
As this is very much a work in progress please offer your feedback here and over at the Updating.me pages on GetSatisfaction.
Design eye
Small footprint with custom chrome. I believe they need to rethink the UX on this AIR application and ditch the dropdown list for simple icons with multiple select features.
Technical eye
As far as I know this was built using Flash CS3 and ActionScript 3. The Updating.me API is currently closed to outside developers although I see this changing in the near future.
