Jonathan Snook has been at it again. Creating AIR apps that start with ‘Sn’. Firstly there was Snitter now there is Snoto Photo, a Flickr browser on AIR for all the cool kids.

The app requires you to authorize it to have access to your Flickr account so that it can read and display your images. It then loads in your images as thumbnails with a nice random fade effect that brighten up as you mouse over them, cool. Clicking an image enables you to view it larger within the app screen. The slideshow is simple with no options for pausing or moving through the images. Would be nice to have a slider that altered the time each image was shown for.

Jonathan has made the Snoto application source code available as a download under Creative Commons License.

Design eye

Nice and simple here, no custom chrome and minimal typography. The thubnails are clear if not a little dark on my screen and sometimes when you move the mouse over them quickly they can get stuck on full opacity. But that’s just being a little picky. Other than that nice work.

Technical eye

As mentioned previously, the source code is available for this and Jonathan outlines the steps taken in the app. It is HTML based making large use of the MooTools JavaScript framework and of course the Flickr API. It will be interesting to see how he handles the authentication with the Flickr API, a lesson for us all in there I think.
