Reviewed Showcase App
Font-picker
September 11th 2008 | by James
Another simple little AIR application to help all the designers out there, font picker.
bq.This simple tool shows you all the fonts installed on your computer and helps you choose which one is most suitable for a particular project.
Each font appears as a list of input boxes where you can type the text you require. Typing in one box updates all of the others, while displaying in the correct font. The number of currently active fonts is displayed at the bottom of the app.
Don’t like a font, well hit the cross in the top right corner to narrow down your list.
As for functionality, well that’s it. I can see this being of more use on a machine where users might not be running native applications like FontExplorer X.
Design and Experience eye
The design works as it is but expanding the application and you would want to address the design. The UI doesn’t resize (strangely cutting off the t in reset) and you are severely restricted on characters especially on larger fonts.
That said there is no reason why this application could not be expanded to offer similar functionality and browsing of non currently installed fonts. Add the ability to print off or create a PDF of your chosen fonts and see the complete font character set would add value.
I can see the concept being take up by other AIR developers and hopefully we will see some more cool design and font related AIR apps.
Technical eye
This application is built using Adobe Flash CS3 and the AIR libraries for gathering local file information.

Thanks for the review. This is just an early release, that I put out there to see if other people found it useful. I made it mainly for myself and never expected it to be so popular.
I have lots of ideas of how I’d like to improve it, but I do want to keep it simple. I’m really interested in knowing people’s feedback. I’ve already improved the scaling like you suggested and will probably be working on PDF output next.
