Fast and Furious AIR widget

Last in the series of three AIR desktop widget reviews is this one promoting the Fast and Furious film.

You can access video, news, downloads and more. This widget still features the ‘grab and share’ failure of the Cirque Du Soleil widget that offers you the ability to download to desktop when you are running the desktop version.

There is also a strange GPS map function that has absolutely nothing to do with GPS. It’s simply the ability to enter your ZIP code and place a car on the map for others to see.

Design eye

Nice custom chrome design although I’m still expecting the exhaust pipes to rev up and shoot out some flames or smoke occasionally that would look great, alas it does not happen. Similar story with the dash clocks. There is however a shimmer to the logotype. The clock and count down timer is nice.

One thing that does bug me from a usability point is the minimise button (using the standard minimise icon) does not minimise the app, you can’t do that. Instead it changes the AIR widget into a smaller footprint that just shows the clock or news scroller. Be careful of design conventions, if your designing desktop AIR apps.

Technical eye

Built using Adobe Flash and the Adobe AIR.

In summary

A more rounded feature set appeals more to this AIR widget and it emplys more social features than some of the other AIR widgets. If your interested in the film worth a download if only to see what happens when the film is released – does the widget change ?
