One for the Flash, Flex and AIR developers here. This Adobe AIR application allows you to view your local LiveDocs in a separate application, not tied to the Flash or Flex IDE. Not a bad idea at all.

Not just a viewer Doc? also enables searching and bookmarking within the books that you add.

When talking about books, you have to tell the application where to find the books on your system. This is quite clunky and was quite confusing when starting the application for the first time. Looking at the Doc? FAQ’s it becomes a little clearer in that you have to specify the location of the book you are going to add. This location differs depending upon your operating system and the type of book you are adding (Flash, Flex etc).

After the initial problems in getting the book uploaded the application runs very well, allowing access and search to all of the features of the LiveDocs.

It has a plugin facility that integrates with the Flash or Eclipse IDE so you can activate Doc? from within your IDE of choice. The plugin is as a standard MXP extension which requires you to have the Adobe Extension Manager installed.

Design eye

Doc? a nice design that is easy on the eye, especially useful when your going to be looking at them for a long time during a project.

Another chromeless application that works well and hints at some design cues from Adobe’s own AIR applications.

I can’t help thinking that the user experience can be better upon first load and when your adding books. The FAQ’s state where on a users system the standard install directories are located, would it not be better to have the AIR app auto locate these based upon the OS? Also why do you have to choose the location then choose the type of book?

This is where a walkthrough or video guide would add wonders to the UX of this part of the app.

Technical eye

Built using Adobe Flex and the Adobe AIR.

In Summary

If your a developer who uses the LiveDocs regularly then you will appreciate the idea and execution of this Adobe AIR application. The MXP plugin is an even better bonus which can only add to your productivity.
