One AIR app I’m not going to review

comments closed August 26th 2008 | by James

It didn’t take long, until some wise startup uses AIR as a platform for laying down ads in a poor attempt at just wrapping a webbrowser.

I’m not the only one that was not impressed with SocialU’s AIR app, ReadWriteWeb has a writeup that is worth a read and expresses much of the thoughts that I had on the app. Make your own mind up. Read the article here.

To be fair, you should inform your readers of other reviews, like :
    http://demogirl.com/2008/08/26/socialu-where-social-networking-sites-live/
    or:
    http://mashable.com/2008/08/26/socialu/

... and we did a little bit more than wrap the browser, but meh.

James, been on here since it was freshairapps, love the site. My other app, Doomi got a ton of traffic from you so thanks in helping that spread.

You should check out DemoGirls screencast for a better understanding as to what socialu does, she pretty much nailed it. It’s a lot more than just a wrapped browser :)

Also, socialu is in beta. Looking at readwriteweb’s screenshot, the main navigation toolbar did not show on login (really unfortunate for us :( It’s a known bug we’re trying to fix.

Anyways, hope you take another look at it. Also, I couldn’t find your name on socialu, did you register with James?

    Later :)

    John & Jesse,

Many thanks for your comments and the other review links you posted.
John, I’m glad you got some good traffic for the Doomi app from here, I liked it.

Firstly, I don’t publish reviews on all of the apps that get submitted to RefreshingApps. I get a lot of submissions and try to choose a good balance of design, tech, UX, features etc.

I linked to the news item as it had similar views to myself, and I did end it by saying make your own mind up.

I didn’t mean to cause any offense and I can appreciate the work you have put into the project and wish you every success in the future.

So I will plan in a review of your application to place into the showcase, so others can give their opinion and comments too.

    Best regards James
