Adobe AIR 64bit LInux pre-release testers needed

Well this came out of the blue. Adobe are actively working on a 64bit version of Adobe AIR and the Linux version is going to be the first one out of the stable.

According to Ashutosh Sharma’s blog the AIR team are requesting that if you are interested and have the time to offer feedback then they would welcome your application to the pre-release program.

Facebook ActionScript 3 API

Some great news this morning from the guys over at Adobe. There is now an ActionScript 3 API for Facebook on Google Code. This is an official API and Adobe have included a new section over at the DevNet purely for Facebook.

This is fantastic news for all those people developer apps and widgets using the Flash Platform. Daniel Dura has a quick introductory video tutorial on creating your first Application using Flex Builder on the DevNet.

Silverlight now competes with AIR on the desktop

At Mix 09 Microsoft announced that it’s Silverlight product can now run on the desktop for both Windows and Mac. This places the Microsoft offering as a competitor with Adobe AIR.

However upon closer examination the two technologies are coming at the desktop RIA space differently. Adobe AIR 1.5.1 is released

This update fixes a number of issues including the annoying Shift + space bug that has been the plague of messages on Twitter for a while now.

There is also a couple of new methods including a one for knowing if the user launched the application or it was launched on system startup. To take advantage of these new methods you will have to change you Application Descriptor File to use Adobe AIR 1.5.1.

Adobe AIR marketplace relaunched

Adobe have released an update their AIR marketplace. The new update is a lot more on brand and is now instantly recognisable as an Adobe site. A cleaner interface with dynamic AJAX effects offer another way of getting Adobe AIR apps.

Just like here on RefreshingApps.com you can vote and see the highest rated apps.

Interestingly RefreshingApps.com is going to be evolving over the coming months. It’s early days and things are currently in development on a whole new custom platform.

Adobe AIR installs now over 100 million!

Adobe have released figures that say the AIR runtime has now reached over 100 million downloads. Also the number of downloads of the AIR SDK hits over 1 million in the last 12 months.

Interestingly the majority of AIR runtime installations happen when a user is attempting to download and AIR app using the badge installer. The vast majority of these coming from the popular apps such as TweetDeck and eBay Desktop.

So get building and delivery your apps to millions!

Interview with Fiat and AKQA on Fiat EcoDrive AIR app

If you have been following AIR applications for a while or event attended Adobe Max Europe in Milan last year you will have come across the Fiat EcoDrive application.

Text layout framework in Flex 3.2 and AIR 1.5

The new text layout framework is fantastic in the latest version of Flex and AIR, using the new Flash Text Engine

I came across a website dedicated to code examples for Adobe AIR. It’s obviously called AIR Examples and is located at http://airexamples.com/.

Written by Peter deHaan who works on the Adobe Flex SDK QA team, is probably better known for his other blog Flex Examples ( http://blog.flexexamples.com/ ) but also runs ActionScript examples too. And I thought running this blog was time consuming!
