comments closed March 19th 2009 | by James
At Mix 09 Microsoft announced that it’s Silverlight product can now run on the desktop for both Windows and Mac. This places the Microsoft offering as a competitor with Adobe AIR.
However upon closer examination the two technologies are coming at the desktop RIA space differently. There have been a lot of confusing reports regarding the Silverlight offering and I wanted to get a more rounded understanding before a rightup. It appears that with Silverlight you can turn any Silverlight web app ...

Adobe have released an update their AIR marketplace. The new update is a lot more on brand and is now instantly recognisable as an Adobe site. A cleaner interface with dynamic AJAX effects offer another way of getting Adobe AIR apps.
Just like here on RefreshingApps.com you can vote and see the highest rated apps.
Interestingly RefreshingApps.com is going to be evolving over the coming months. It’s early days and things are currently in development on a whole new custom platform.

The new text layout framework is fantastic in the latest version of Flex and AIR, using the new Flash Text Engine
Head on over to the Adobe labs page for the textlayout that has a tour of the new features.
Mihai CORLAN has a great write up on the new features, so if your in developing an AIR application that needs advanced text flowing and support for right to left languages you need to read up on this.

Another big milestone for Adobe AIR was reached today when the Adobe AIR 1.5 runtime for Linux graduated out of beta. A visit to the Adobe Labs pages for the linux version of AIR results in a polite message saying that the AIR runtime is now available from the usual Adobe AIR download page.
This is great news for Linux users as they can now have a solid platform for cross platform applications on which to run some fantastic AIR apps that need the new 1.5 version like the latest Twhirl.

The new Adobe software code named Thermo has been demoed at conferences and online quite a bit since Max last year. It is still very much in pre-release development however Adobe have released the actual product name for Thermo – Flash Catalyst. I think it is a very good name due to the very nature of where the tool sits within the new CS4 suite and upcoming Flex 4.
If your not familiar with what the application offers, it works with the new FXG format that Adobe is integrating with Flex 4 ...
