comments closed April 29th 2008 | by James

Looks like the guys over at Worth1000 have been very busy of late. They are working on a suite of 18 tools targeted towards digital editing, typography and writing. The apps are going to be available to use within the browser of fully downloadable as AIR applications. I have signed up for the beta so as soon as I have my hands on the apps I will do a full review.

Check it out at http://a.vairy.com

The site is looking good and naming the tools after birds is an inspired idea. Can’t wait for ...

AIR Survey

comments closed April 26th 2008 | by James

Peter Elst has posted about helping a student with their thesis on Adobe AIR. You could possibly help him out with a survey.

If you’re a company based in Belgium or the Netherlands, regardless of your level of experience with the Adobe Integrated Runtime, I’d appreciate a few minutes of your time to participate in a little survey (questions in Dutch).

Linkage here.

AS3, AIR and garbage collection

Sean Christmann has posted a really useful document on ActionScript 3, AIR and the Flash player garbage collection. Sean is part of the team that built the eBay desktop AIR application. The article explains in detail the problems they had with AIR releasing memory back to the OS, then discusses how they have coded solutions to the problems. An interesting read, aimed more at the problems faced when deploying large scale production apps using Adobe Flex 3 in AIR.

Ted Patrick has release DARE – The Adobe AIR Development Web Server that he has been working on. Currently Mac only the website says:

DARE is a local http server that makes it easy to create, test, and package AIR applications. It allows you to develop and test using your HTML/JS tools of choice and just a web browser. You can even use the “Refresh” button to test and package your application.

Twhirl aquired by Seesmic

comments closed April 08th 2008 | by James

Techcrunch has broken the story about Twhirl being aquired by the San Fran video/chat startup Seesmic. This is could well be one of the first AIR applications to be aquired. Seesmic is going to integrate their service in to the existing offerings of Twhirl which makes perfect sense. Seesmic is still invite only beta but from what I have seen it looks to be a lot more than a ‘video Twitter’.
